Books pleats.... getting lost in the pages

It's that time of year again the gorgeous team at Artisan are holding their Annual Artist Book Show again. I am there will bells on. I'm looking forward to taking part again, based on the range of work, quality of the submissions from last year I have my work cut out for me!
Lost in the Pages by Sai-Wai Foo

With my entry this year I decided to explore what I love about books. I like to develop ideas based on a theme or on a thought. This time I wanted to look at the immersive elements of reading, the simple joy of getting lost in the text and pages. Nothing nicer than losing yourself in great writing combine that with a cup of tea and I'm really a very happy girl!

Here's a few work In progress shots of the piece. It's titled "lost in the pages" and is a small scale paper and mixed media sculpture. A enamel painted doll's head is engulfed by pleated book pages, the book binding is super soft distressed leather that I have been using on & off for awhile. I love the aged patina & marks on the leather.

I currently have some other work at Artisan in the cabinets, so if you happen to be in the area duck by & have a look.

If you are on the hunt for a craft, art or fashion book this is a great store. The staff are really knowledgeable, friendly and will do their best to help you track out a hard to find book! The show runs from 14th September to the 12th October  and details below!

Mini the wonderdog - rest in peace little bear

MINI
19/2/2004 - 9/9/2013

Early this week I lost my best friend and constant companion of approx 5 years, Mini the beautiful brush coat Shar Pei. I was adopted by Mini in 2009 at the time she was in the care of SPR (Shar Pei rescue inc.) A wonderful group of volunteers who I have had the great fortune to get to know and many I can call amongst my friends.

It truly was love at first sight. She was a little chunky, ok she was fat. She was not in the best condition, her eye surgery had just been done sutures like fake eye lashes were sticking out at odd angles, her nasal nares were healing too. Her fur was a sun-bleached from being an outside dog, never the less she was beautiful. At our first meeting she sat on the leather ottoman, something she was not supposed to do and raised her paw to me to introduce herself. With that Mini had my heart there and then, I was utterly besotted I have loved her from that moment and will always love her.

She was a dog that looked like a bear-hippo-wombat-dugong who bounced down the stairs like a bunny. Who stood at the top of the landing with the stance of a little bull and had the stubbornness to match. Mini had strange little quirks, she would refuse to walk through puddles but think nothing of rolling in wet grass. She was cheeky, nimble as a Ninja and just as silent when it came to the art of stealing delicious soft goats cheese and other forbidden snacks. She was equally well versed in the art of manipulation and had the gifts of a great actress when it came to the charade of innocence when caught. Further her skills as a master manipulator were legendary, her ability to con treats and cuddles out of anyone were legendary.

Maiphatlayde Mini Dee was her full name, or Mini for short, when she was in trouble, Mini Dee. Also know as Little bear, Lumpkin, smelly bear, stinky, fattie, Squishkin, Poopie, Peanut, angel bear, Miss Moo, Moopy, Princess, Hippo-bear, fluffy-bum, puppy, beautiful girl, Madam, moocher and Mini the wonderdog. Whatever the title she was my constant companion, partner in crime, sandwich stealer, cheese and mooncake thief. Snorer, slobber monster, shedder of fur, destroyer of dental splints, air pollution expert with an ability to clear a room in record time. Also she had appeared television and online, been in photoshoots and in print, she was an artist’s muse too. She was a hard working office assistant, studio manager, supervisor, greeter, who napped on couture gowns and had very expensive taste in fabrics.

Mini was more than a dog to me, she never displayed any dog-like behavior, more of a short person in a fur coat. Never fetching a stick or showing any interest in “doggie pursuits”, rather preferring to watch, supervise and generally be the boss of the show. Any trips to the dog park would involve me playing with “real” dogs and Mini hanging out with the other dog owners hustling pats and treats, watching her human utterly embarrass and mortify her.

Recently Mini had a few health problems, nothing that I thought could not be fixed with trips to the vet, good care and love. After all she was 9 1/2 and in great condition for a breed notorious for it's unique and very varied health problems. She was her ideal weight, sleek, healthy, the glossiness of her coat was a source of comment. I was so proud of her and would always let her have the pats and attention from strangers who thought as I did that she was gorgeous.

Last week I arrived home to find her having breathing problems; a rushed trip to the vet was to initially settle it and make her comfortable. The follow up the next day was to investigate further; a lump was found in the throat close to her tonsils and removed. It was sent for testing and the diagnosis was that of Lymphoma. Armed with statics and information, I liked the odds of remission and decided to go down the path of chemotherapy. We attended our first session on Friday, despite the breeds’ terrible veins, it when well, Mini seemed good. No nausea, she was a little tired but nothing that wasn’t expected. Mini was unimpressed with the shaved spots on her beautiful coat but the numerous pats and liver treats from the vet seemed to satisfy her. She was tired on Saturday morning, but otherwise fine enjoying her food and little trip to the park, same again Sunday. Sunday evening she had a lovely dinner of roast chicken which she thoroughly enjoyed, plus my sister had made her some salmon treats – all was good in Mini’s world yummy food, she’d had lots of attention, got to go to the dog park that day to sit in the sun and roll on the warm grass. I tucked her into bed and she fell asleep, she was snoring content and happy.

Early Monday morning was when it all changed. She woke and just could not settle back down. Her breathing was getting worse & she couldn’t find a comfortable position to sleep, I sat with her holding her head and propping up her up with pillows, she would sleep for a bit. Then it would get too much and the awful ragged breathing would start again. Just before dawn I knew it was time to let her go, her breathing was laboured, she was floppy, she was so, so tired. My beautiful girl was put to sleep that morning, her breathing slowed and she was gone. I held her for the last time and said my goodbyes. I stayed until she lost the warmth in her body.

So now my house is strangely empty and quiet, there is no sound snoring or click of her nails on the floorboards. I expect to hear her or see her barreling through the dog door. When fireworks are set off I know I will miss her attempts to protect me from the noise by barking at the ceiling. Artwork  and drawings can now lie drying on the floor without out my little critic sitting on the pieces she does not approve of. I can eat toast in peace, I don’t have to check myself when I leave the house for a snail trail of drool on my pant legs.  My floor will be missing the tumbleweeds her shedding fur, my walls will be free of slobber and I can use white bed linens again with not fear of dribble and weird stains. I can go to the bathroom unsupervised and not have a nose force the door open; I am loath to clean the smudge mark her nose made off the door.

I know for me, my life without a dog is not complete; no doubt I will get another furry companion. Whoever that is will be loved and will help heal the raw void that Mini's passing has left but there is a place always in my heart for my little girl. I am grieving for the loss of my companion; I miss her noises and her presence, the gentle nudging of her substantial snout, the poke with her paw, her soft little ears, our cuddles, her purrs and disapproving grunts. The morning sneeze in my face which served as her way of greeting, her sweaty tummy, the slight corn chip smell of her paws, I miss it all. The weight and warmth of her next to me, the rhythmic sound of her breathing and snores that I have grown accustomed to.

I am blessed to have the time I have had with such an amazing creature. She really did have a full and rich life, I tell myself this to console myself as I need something, it hurts.

I miss her, I miss her so much it aches.

Mini, adored and adorable, always and forever loved

Rest in Peace my little bear I love you

Beasts in the Wardrobe, Bronchitis & bad telly....

Beasts in the Wardrobe is a project I have been working on as part of MSFW. (Melbourne Spring Fashion Week), as part of their curated  And one of those moments where I have thought "oh no...I've bitten off more than I can chew." In large part due to a spectacular bout of bronchitis brought on by my sister sharing her germs with me, thank you sooooo much... who said she never gave me anything nice?

All of this came about because Madame Virtue had a sale earlier this year & I got to poke around the amazing archive collection. Getting to play in a wardrobe full of designer goodies, exotic jewels, accessories, beautiful fabrics and other gorgeous things got me thinking about dressing up.
Beast masks at the ready - Sai-Wai Foo

I got all excited about doing an installation at the store - really I wanted to play with all the toys again. Also I was blissfully unaware of just what I would have in the pipeline for this time of year. Currently I am working, pattern-making and making things for upcoming shows as well as, being addicted to Pinter-est, obsessed with Ink Master & Tattoo Nightmares. (yes crap telly I know but what are you supposed to do when I have to wait a week for my Breaking Bad fix?) I say it's all good stuff & it makes me happy :)
Bunny & the Wolf trying on a few accessories

My terrible viewing habits aside, I am making paper masks of different animals that will sit on full size mannequins. Each creature has a different personality & of course will have an outfit to suit. The show is a collaboration with Madame Virtue's in house stylist Dean we are going to play designer dress ups with my creatures. Can't wait! I have a bear, a wolf, a tiger, a deer and of course a rabbit; all waiting to dress up and hang around the store over MSFW. (Melbourne Spring Fashion Week)

"Come to a dress-up for wild fashion animals, celebrating the fun of occasion dressing and the body as a canvas and an expression of personality.

Sai-Wai Foo, of ‘Pleatybunny by Miss Foo’, has unleashed a preening pack of exotic beasts upon Madam Virtue, where they had free rein of the wardrobe.

Masks and head-dresses fashioned from paper are combined with archival designer pieces, jewels and accessories, where more is definitely better!

Playing with textures, fabrics and the full palette of colours and patterns, this is the ultimate dress-up for all the wild fashion animals!"

the bay & porthole gallery

A couple of months ago I went on a little adventure on the water! The accompanying pictures are from this glorious day.

I took part in very inspiring session on the water with about 35 other artists. It was organized by the lovely folk at the "Mission to Seafarers" who do great work with all the sea farers that past through our bays. http://www.missiontoseafarers.com.au/

There was a grand plan to stay outdoors to paint/draw but the lure of a deck chair, lazing in the warm sun & eating crispy triple fried chips was far too much for me. It all proved utterly distracting but at least my vitamin D levels got a boost! The other plus side is I managed to lead friend astray who was supposed to be diligently working in her studio.

I've been obsessed with the docks and ship yards for a long time, I keep my old sketchbooks and it is funny how I keep coming back to particular ideas and themes.
I love the scale of the ships & the toy-like building block look of the shipping containers.
Based on that jaunt on the water I'm working on an entry for the ANL Maritime art prize for later in the year. Fingers-crossed I am a finalist, I don't paint often but thought having a project with set date would be good for me!

My involvement with the Mission doesn't end there, I have been invited to show at the new Porthole Gallery based in the docklands. A few of my pleated paper sculptures are going to be housed at the gallery as well as some smaller collage pieces over the coming weeks.

The gallery officially opens the 20th of August and will house nautical theme artworks. 30% of the profits will go towards the Mission and all the wonderful work that they do. More on the gallery here & Facebook

LOVE LOVE LOVE....

I love group shows especially when they are with a fun group of makers & artisans. Whenever I get an email from Gleaners Inc about taking part in a show I get really excited!

"Take Heart" at Gleaners Inc. show opens the 2nd of August & runs until the 31st of August
a show Craft Victoria's Craft Cubed festival. I took part last year here's the link to that particular blog post.

I've been a bit obsessed with Milagros, reliquaries, ex votos and scared hearts of late. I've been finding pinterest really good for collecting images for ideas my pinterest board for this project and getting the creative juices flowing.

I think it is the shiny gilded gold foil & over the top decorations, I'm of the more is more school of thought an love the use of gold foiling & precious metals in  iconography - something which seems to re-occur despite the differences in religions and belief systems world-wide. About 10 years ago I went to an amazing gold & silver leaf themed exhibition at the Tokyo museum in Japan. To be honest I think I had a moment of Stendhal syndrome at this particular exhibition. I suppose it would pass for some sort of quasi-religious/transcendental/mythical experience depending on your faith. I've always had a penchant for the glittery & shiny must have been the sheer volume of beautiful, gilded, gorgeousness that got me! Seriously pop something shiny in front of me and I can be utterly distracted.

Here are a few images of my work for the show they are paper assemblages with a bit of a craft/sewing element with the steel pins & also a slightly creepy anatomical/ medical book element too. My thinking is that with a bit of metallic paint & ruffled pleated paper can make anything look pretty. They are shadow box framed and a homage to the sacre coeur images I love.
Pop along and have a look show, there's a few other shows & events as part of the festival so checkout the Craft Vic web page.

That is due to start in late August so just stay tuned for the blog post!

Hot House at Quirk & co - Look.Stop.Shop and other stuff!

It's been pretty busy in Miss Foo's world of late so the blog posts have been sporadic at best.
I've got a little project that is coming to fruition this week, "hot house" is a group window installation that is being hosted by the lovelies at Quirk & Co. It is mix of lighting sculptures by Nick Johns, a series of lush terrariums by Miniscapes and a large paper sculpture by yours truly! The opening night is Thursday 11th July from 6-8pm & the installation will be up until month end.
It's  part of Look.Stop.Shop the theme this year is "Hot Stuff" and it's being curated by Three Thousand and presented by the City of Melbourne, so check out the link for more details as there are loads of events running through July.

Where
466 Victoria St, North Melbourne
When
Opening Thu Jul 11, 6–8pm. Installation runs until Jul 26.

PS have another coming up project with the City of Melbourne during MSFW, it will be titled "beasts in the wardrobe" at the end of August. It's being hosted by Madame Virtue ... can't wait to get my paws on all their couture archives and the delicious accessories! YAY dress ups! (but more on that in another post!)

I managed to catch the Hollywood costume exhibition at ACMI I was super excited as I am a costume and film buff. As always with any textile based show the lighting levels are low to protect the fabrics, so give your eyes time to adjust. I would suggest to go in the morning when they first open to avoid the crowds!
The dialogues between the directors, actors and designers a must see as they really put the role of costume in context and gives you insight into the process of designing & creating the characters.

Highlights for me included:

- Sean Young's outfit from "Blade Runner"
- Scarlett O'Hare's Curtain dress from "Gone with the Wind
- Paisley sequined & beaded pants suit from Valley of the Dolls
- The Bridal costumes from breath taking "The Last Emperor" from 1987
- Robert De Niro's suit from "Casino", peach suit? Say no more!
- Tippi Hedren's suit from the "birds"  the interview with Edith Head is pretty amazing too
-  Liz Taylor's costumes from Cleopatra
- Marilyn Monroe's infamous white dress from the "Seven Year Itch"
- Greta Garbo's tuxedo... Sigh!
 - It would be remiss of me not to mention Judy Garland's Dorothy outfit from "The Wizard of Oz" What was also striking was the size and scale of these outfits, you realise just how tiny some of these actors are!
- costumes by Eiko Ishioka, I'm utterly obsessed with her. They have costumes from "Bram Stoker's Dracula" in the show but she was one of those amazing multi-talent individuals who was an art director, costumer, graphic designer with an amazing vision , she passed away in early 2012. Known for designing, Grace Jones stage costumes for the Hurricane tour, for films like "The Fall", "The Cell", "The Immortals". I have a pinterest board  dedicated to her work, as I have been unable to get hold of the now out of print book!

Because of exhibition I am now obsessed with watching tonnes of films, I suppose it is a perfect activity for staying tucked under a blankie in my oneise!

Ladies night... meow

"A sailor stole my heart" as been packed up and a number of pieces are going to some good homes. Artifice store was great to work with & I have another different type of project teed up with them in July of this year. I ended up with an award from Art in Public Places, Hobsons Bay City Council one for "Best use of Space"
Receiving my award from AIPP
If you missed the show I have a few pieces that are going to be hosted at  Artisan Books & also at Quirk & Co over the next month. Follow the link for details!

Article about the show that appeared in paper
So what else have I been up to? Aside from working and teaching I've been working of a series of four portraits of iconic women for an upcoming show at at Artboy gallery on Greville street. I was pretty keen to take part as one on my favorite publications was going to be in attendance, crew from Curvy are going to be there on opening night.
Draw no dudes was the theme... "FanBoy vs ArtBoy: Ladies Night" at ArtBoy Gallery, should be a fun show as it is a pop culture base gallery and it is also an open call.

Love these sort of shows especially with the fan-boy element - it's the first one I've taken part in but I have attended a few of these shows in the past and they are great even if you aren't really into art. But for me it is a chance to get my geek & my draw on!

I chose ladies of music as my starting point, of course being a child of the 80's I went for my four favorite, most iconic stylish ladies in pop culture and music. Annie Lennox, Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry & Grace Jones in iconic poses. Rather than just being a portrait I gave them a feline bent, meow! I re-imagined them as domestic cats each in their own distinctive outfits. Borderline crazy cat lady, to be honest probably truly crazy cat lady.
Below are the pieces before framing and yes that is a glitter background you spy!

Opening night is the 24th of May 6-8pm & see below for details!

Pop by & visit!

"A sailor stole my heart" and other happenings!

2012 was a  pretty awesome year for Pleatybunny, myself creatively and just in general! 2013 has lots to live up to but based on what's happening and what's about to happen it is going the right way.
My big hairy bear for Men with Beards at OTK
I have been a bit slack on the blog front, sadly I have not been lazing around on the couch with a fluffy snoring dog at my feet eating toasted cheese sandwiches & drinking cups of tea whilst watching trashy TV. Ahhh I can only dream.

Firstly Pleatybunny by Miss Foo turned a year old! It's been year since I started Pleatybunny & also started working on my art practice. It's been an awesome year full of fun & loads of different projects, meeting new people, learning lots & making things!
"The flutter from my mind" from the Linden Postcard show
"An over abundance of style" from "a piece of Cloth at Gleaners inc.

I've had a pretty action packed first quarter of the year. Creatively it's been amazing as I have been in involved with a couple of group shows: the Toy to the World Show, the Linden Postcard show, "a Piece of Cloth' part of LMFF at Gleaners Inc. and an up-coming show at Off the Kerb gallery titled Men with Beards.
Flyer for Men with Beards

Aside from this I also ran away overseas to India & Nepal - two places I will definitely be going back to. Inspiring, beautiful, breathtaking are three words that spring to mind about my visit. All this whilst committing to two solo shows! Yes I never learn but as I always say there is nothing like the pressure of a deadline to get those creative juices flowing.

The first was "Dedicated Followers OF fashion" which was part of the LMFF (L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival) Cultural program.

I was a show born out of my I love well dressed people, I'm not talking models the brand obsessed but people with an actual sense of personal style. Fashion design is so homogeneous,  it is looking all very same same. That is why when I see a "rare bird" I get really excited! I'm kind of like a nerdy style twitcher.

Inspiration can come in some many forms however my favorite are the true fashion eccentrics - the women I look at & say when I grow up I want to be like that! I have a list of these fabulous ladies that I am obsessed with that if i ever get stuck i just look at these fabulous ladies and I am filled with joy and utterly inspired all over again!

My list of ladies in no particular order & by no means is this a complete list

  • Diana Vreeland
  • Nan Kempler
  • Anna Piaggi
  • Isabella Blow
  • Iris Apfel
  • IIIona Star
  • Daphne Guinness
  • Polly Mellen
  • Marchesa Casati
  • Vivenne Westwood
  • Lynn Yaeger
  • Edith Sitwell
  • Little Edie Bouvier
  • Dolly Parton
  • Barbara Cartland
  • Zandra Rhodes

I was once told that how you dress in your 40's is how you dress for the rest of your life, I am working up to being over accessorized, too much makeup and big hair.... oh I can dream!
The shop was based on all these influences and to quote my blurb in the program; "A motley crew of fashion animals has taken over the retail space of Quirk & Co in North Melbourne to pose and preen. They are fabulous some bodies with coiffed dos and immaculate grooming who have donned their best outfits for LMFF.

These fashionable beasts will be in residence in the store over the festival, with there own take on sartorial style. Dedicated followers of Fashion pays homage to the fashion’s style mavericks and fashion eccentrics who embrace fashion and dressing up. These are enigmatic style icons, who flout the rules of conventional fashion and are indeed rare beasts."
The show was hosted by Quirk & Co. a fabulous design store in North Melbourne. The exhibition was supposed to run from 8-31 March. However the beasts have made themselves utterly at home in the store and are refusing to come home so if you get a chance you can duck by & still catch them in store for the next 2 weeks.

Mini the wonder dog being a fabulous beast

Lastly "phew" I got myself involved with Art in Public Places is a city wide event that exhibits the artwork of western region artists in various venues across Hobsons Bay. The program links the community, local businesses, and Hobsons Bay’s vibrant arts scene, and provides an opportunity for artists to showcase their work to an audience who may not otherwise see it.

I just scraped in with my expression of interest as I got my proposal in at the eleventh hour, nothing like a deadline to kick my bum in gear. A recurring theme in my life, possibly yes?

I got matched up with fabulous retail space called Artifice Store, located in the historic Customs Wharf Galleria - which as a building that was sitting idel for many years, it has been turned in to a retail space with stores in it's many rooms, it's a work in progress but a very excitign retail space. It's a galleria set ups to there are a couple of businesses with in the building to you can have a wander and explore... nice, if like me you like to have a sticky beak.

I will also be holding an exhibition in store over the month of April as part of the Hobsons Bay city council's "Art in public places" program. My solo show is titled "a Sailor stole my heart" and will be housed in ‘The Backroom’ of Artifice store located in the historic Customs Wharf Galleria. The exhibition explores themes of long journeys, love, longing, waves, and salty sea air. It's mix of sculptural and illustrative work highlights the nautical past of the bay, and the relationship of the sea, docks and waterways to the communities’ identity.  The show runs all month & opening night is tonight from 6-8pm otherwise please see below for shop details.
